If you really want to get to know a man, take a look at his library. What he reads, that’s the good stuff. That’s the stuff that lets you know what he’s interested in, what he’s passionate about.
Too much of our days are consumed with the noise of 280 character novellas, so let’s start recommending some books to each other.
Welcome to Beebs Reads, edition 1:
Speaking of the good stuff, pick up a copy of The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe.
It was the early days of America’s race to the heavens. The term “space race” had barely been coined and we were already losing to the Russians and Sputnik I. America needed to catch up and fast. In response, the Air Force launched M.I.S.S. or “Man In Space Soonest” (later the Mercury project) and we set off to beat the Russians and put a man in space.
The Right Stuff is the story of elite military test pilots and what it takes to sit atop a rocket and be thrust into the cosmos like a human cannonball. It’s macho fighter jock culture, the heroism behind it, the bars where it drank and the heights that it climbed.
It’s excellent and worth a read.
