We'd never been to Scotland before.

Michael Williams was already there, somewhere in the Highlands, fishing with David Coggins. A few months earlier we'd been talking about another collaboration shirt and decided the only sensible thing to do was meet him there to photograph it.

The idea behind the shirt was simple. Michael wanted an adventure shirt without the A in adventure. Not something overly technical, rather a shirt you could wear wandering down a dirt track in the morning and into the pub that evening with a jacket thrown over it.

Katie and I landed in Edinburgh, where we met our photographer, Joseph Beeching, a young photographer from London, then picked up a Defender 130 from a wonderful Scotsman named Scott. From there it was a three-hour drive north to Glenkindie.

The motorway quickly gave way to roundabouts, then to narrow roads that twisted deeper into the countryside. More than once Joe leaned forward from the back seat to remind me, "Left side."

We stopped more times than we needed to. Windswept hills gave way to dense forests before opening into rolling farmland where barley and wheat swayed. Every few miles seemed to reveal an entirely different landscape. It was one of those drives where you find yourself pulling over simply because you can't believe what you're looking at.

By the time we reached the estate where we'd be staying, we were completely taken with the place. It was a sprawling working farm with stone cottages scattered across the hillsides. Tractors crawled through the fields making hay. Cattle grazed outside our cottage while swallows darted from their nests beneath the eaves out across the pasture and back again. Before we'd taken a single photograph, it already felt like the perfect home for this shirt.

Michael arrived a couple of days later and we spent the next day photographing across the estate, wandering through fields, fording some rivers and ending the afternoon at the local pub.

It was a remarkably short trip. Michael and I still laugh that we flew all the way to Scotland to photograph one shirt.

But some places stay with you long after you've left. Scotland certainly did. Every time we see the Highlands Field Shirt we're reminded of those winding roads, quiet farms, good company and one unforgettable corner of the world.
